About the McWhirters Building

The McWhirters Building is a beloved heritage-listed icon commanding the famous "Valley Corner" at the intersection of Brunswick and Wickham Streets in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Established in 1898 by Scottish immigrant James McWhirter, the business grew from a small drapery shop into a massive, multi-level retail emporium that covered nearly an acre of land and fiercely rivalled neighbouring retailer T.C. Beirne. The complex was constructed in four main stages between 1902 and 1931 to accommodate its booming department and mail-order trade; its most recognisable feature-the spectacular, truncated Art Deco corner clad in decorative terracotta tiles-was completed in 1931 during the depths of the Great Depression. The retail giant was eventually bought out by Myer in 1955, which operated there until the late 1980s. Today, the brilliantly preserved building has found a second life, featuring a bustling hub of ground-floor multicultural eateries, shops and markets, while its upper floors have been converted into airy, high-ceilinged residential apartments.
